The Athenian sanctuary of the goddess Artemis Brauronia was second in importance to the main sanctuary at Brauron, a village north of Athens, from which the goddess gets her name.
Artemis was celebrated as a protector of pregnant women. Here, the goddess received offerings, often of woollen or silk garments, from the women of Athens.
