Temple of Athena Nike

One of the earliest structures on this corner of the Acropolis was a small temple built for Athena Nike. The Athenians worshipped Athena Nike when they hoped for, or gave thanks for, victory in battle.

The temple was destroyed when the Persians attacked the buildings on the Acropolis in 480 BC. A new temple was built during the time of the Peloponnesian War.
