Religion - Ivory Lion

This figurine was left as an offering to the goddess Artemis Orthia. Special offerings made from luxury materials, such as gold, silver and ivory, are found at her sanctuary near Sparta from about 700 BC. They show the increasing wealth of Sparta at this time.
